YOGA KNOWLEDGE

Module 1

The Five Points of Yoga

Yoga sees the body as a vehicle that needs complete care. Proper exercise is the lubrication system, proper breathing is the energy source, proper relaxation is the cooling system, proper diet is the fuel, and positive thinking with meditation is the driver who steers the body in the right direction.

Module 2

The Four Paths of Classical Yoga

Each path suits a different temperament and life situation. Whatever path you choose, the goal is union of body, mind, and spirit. Like many routes to the same destination, each journey brings its own experiences, lessons, and challenges—yet with perseverance, all can lead to the goal.

How the Mind Works

The mind has waves of thought (vritti). Swami Sivananda said the mind creates havoc through its power of change. The meditator tries to calm thought-waves through concentration. A clear still lake shows a true reflection (sattvic mind); a rippled lake distorts the image (rajasic mind); a muddy lake obscures it (tamasic mind).

Cancer—often we are our own trigger

Yoga for spinal health

Stress and how stress affects the spine

  • Injury
  • Myositis
  • Stress · anxiety
  • Overweight
  • Low activity
  • Poor posture
  • Herniated disc
  • Sciatica

Stress, inactivity, poor posture and physical factors are the main causes of back pain — addressed comprehensively through 3 layers of relaxation:

Physical

Savasana, breath to release muscles, focus on autosuggestion

Mental

Slow breath, transforming emotions, mantra, present-moment living

Spiritual

Ms. Ho Thi Dung practicing yoga

"I had surgery on my right arm with three screws in the elbow. After about two months I came back to class; at my follow-up the doctor said my movement was very good. When I mentioned yoga he objected at first, but after I explained the gentle guidance, chair options, and modified arm poses tailored for me, he agreed I could continue. "
